Use It Else You Lose It!!

Once a super active lady with her family had to be on a lengthy vacation away from her sweet home. Being ‘The lady of house’ she had to do a big task to close things at home. That means not only dealing with vendors to halt supply of various goods but also deal with electronic stuff in kitchen and rest of the rooms. Plan was to put off main power switch which she had never done in last many years. Obviously that brings in task of clearing and cleaning ovens, fridge and other electrical appliances. She was very proud of her role of ‘The lady of the house’ and her conservation skills she was known for. Yes, we all must develop habit of conserving vulnerable supplies such as water, oils and electricity for saving future of mankind and our blue, lively planet.

After relaxing vacation when she returned back to home, in her role of ‘Lady of the house’ she went to check if things were in place. But to her dismay she found many things were not in working condition. After turning on power supply she realized that bulbs of rooms were not glowing. Tried to turn on gas stove but found that lighters were not working. Tried to turn on stove with other means and found the gas supply through the pipe was slowed down. After opening fridge she found that it was not cooling and oven was not heating up as required. It was a nightmare for her. Next couple of days were very busy for her to make everything work again. With this we can understand how much it is important to ‘Get Going’, putting things into use specially the things that are vulnerable and things that have been in heavy use. And it is equally true for the fabulous machine engineered by God, the body, mind and even his mega factory, the life.

Every machine is developed with some purpose. Leaving it idle causes loss of its ability to function.

  • We experience that if we do not exercise our body catches up illnesses. We know that people who suddenly stop their heavy gym exercises regret later.
  • If we do not involve our mind in right activities then it loses its ability to think rationally.
  • If we do not channelize our emotional energies we fall prey to depression.
  • If we do not put our skills and talents into practice, eventually we forget those.

Does that mean we cannot conserve our energies or pause to relax? Off course we have to relax and pause for some time.

What can we ensure when we want to come to halt with something?

  • Balancing between consumption and conservation
It is irresponsible to waste important resources. We need to keep our consumption in check. However it is not wise to keep those resources in lockups forever. Over conservation not only defeats the purpose but also makes life miserable. Our schedule should be such that we are not idle for longer time at the same time we are not overdoing mindlessly.
    • Regular maintenance is the key.

Every machine needs maintenance at regular intervals to keep it in working condition and avoid its failure in future. Appliances specially over-used are going to fall down immediately when their state changes. Regular checks and repairs are important for our health, relations, jobs and all aspects of life at least till we have mastered skill of living life. Resting and taking short breaks at regular internal is important to recover strength.

  • Developing plan for graceful windup and monitoring the plan consciously.
If appliances are to be switched off for longer period it is important to clean them thoroughly and to leave them in moisture free environment. The self-attached label ‘The lady of the house’ caused huge trouble. Instead of doing things in hurry the lady could have called other members for her help to close home gracefully.
Similarly important life events like career transition, relationship transitions should involve thorough planning. In such events calling mentors for guidance and appointing a coach for assistance in planning and execution is a great idea.
What if we put ‘The Manager in corporate’ in place of ‘The lady of the house’, unfortunately the results will be exactly similar.Under-utilized and exhausted employees severely impact business growth as well as their own personal growth. Hence a wise manager has to monitor his most important assets that is employees. He must learn ways not only to achieve his business targets but also to keep his employees engaged and motivated. He must strive not only for excellence in work but also work-life-balance for himself and his teams. A Professional coach can be a great help to devise best suited techniques for transforming work place into inspiring and radiant ‘Karmabhoomi’.
